Grunge Chic
I recently teamed up with my friends Cam Brown and Erica Stewart for a grungy 90s inspired photoshoot. We reached out to local model Annika and she was down to shoot.
The initial idea we came up with was to do the shoot in a field of flowers or a beautifully manicured backyard, but the weather had other plans. It had rained heavy for a few days and the ground was totally soaked. To avoid ruining the clothes, we shifted our idea and decided to utilize a few different locations around my studio.
We started inside against a white wall and lit Annika with a single light with a softbox attached. I wanted to make the image feel like it was shot backstage at a rock concert at a punk club in the 90s. To do that, I used the single light to create a soft glow on one side and a soft shadow over the other side. I didn’t want the light to hit the wall too much to keep the dramatic effect.
For the second look, Cam added another layer over the dress and we moved into the stairwell. We utilized the natural light that came in from a large window overhead. I wanted to use the landing to show some depth in the shot and use the leading lines from the wall to lead you in to the photo.
For the third look, we went outside the studio and came across this trailer that was parked outside and it couldn’t have been more perfect for the outfit Cam put together paired with the hair and makeup by Erica. The sun was behind us for this shot so we used a reflector to bounce light back at her which helped to avoid over exposure from the sun.
